Mobile Money Vendors In Jaman South are Angry with Government over its decisions to introduce self service registration app for Sim registration

Mobile money vendors in Jaman South Municipality in the Bono Region are very angry with the Ministry of Communications ,headed by Hon. Ursula Owusu Akuffo over her decision to introduce self service registration app which will enable Ghanaians to register their Sim card without going to the mobile money vendors for registration at a fee.

In an address to the press on 31st July, 2022 which was the deadline the Ministry of Communication headed by Madam Ursula Owusu Akuffo set for the registration of all Sim cards in Ghana, the Ministry extended the registration to 30 September, 2022 and also added that, the Ministry is going to introduce self registration app which will enable subscribers to register their Sims at the comfort of their homes at a fee of ¢5.00.

In an interview with some of the Momo vendors in the Jaman South Municipality, they said this initiative when implemented is going to affect their business because people would not be coming to them again for registration at a fee but prefer to do it themselves. They stressed that it will crumble their business because that is what they do in order to get their daily bread.

Notwithstanding, some of the customers who visits some of these Momo vendors for registration also expressed mixed reactions. Some are of the view that, those who used smart phones will be favoured with the self registration app while those who used ‘yam’ wouldn’t be able to register on their own.

However, they believe that it will also FasTrack the registration of Sims as there would be no more queue in the various Sim registration centers.
